Mt Elgon


Mt. Elgon is a stand alone hunk of a mountain and long extinct volcano that bears a striking resemblance to Mount Ventoux, the legendary Tour de France climb. With the largest surface area of any extinct volcano in the world (50km by 80 km, Mountain Elgon is the forth highest mountain in East Africa and with the second highest peak in Uganda. (Wagagai peak 4321 meters).

Mountain. Elgon is an extinct massive solitary volcanowhich borders eastern Uganda and western Kenya that first erupted more than 24 million years ago. It is surrounded by rugged peaks a collapsed crater, with the largest intact caldera on top the mountain.

Mount Elgon National Park is a national park 140 km North East of Lake Victoria. The park covers an area of 1279 km˛ and is bisected by the border of Kenya and Uganda. The Ugandan part of the park covers 1110 km˛ while the Kenyan part covers 169 km˛. The Kenyan part of the park was gazette in 1968, the Ugandan part in 1992.

Mountain Elgon is located in the Eastern part of Uganda. With its caldera, it is quite another interesting mountain hiking destination. It is ideal for both medium and high climbers. Reaching its peak Wagagai peak is quite adventurous and interesting. Being easy to climb Mt Elgon hiking does not require any specialized equipment or skills to reach the peak apart from physical fitness. Mt Elgon is not so high that there is a serious risk of altitude- related illnesses that regularly troubles hikers on higher Mountains like Kilimanjaro and Mt. Kenya.

Mount Elgon is easy to climb and can be climbed at any time of the year, though the dry seasons are better (June-August and December-March) November and December are the best times given the fact that it is when the highland flowers are in.

The park consists of four-distinct forest zones;(3000-3500) the lush montane forest where Elgon teak is found followed by the mixed bamboo belt (2400-3000m), the fascinating heath and the spectacular moorland hyraces which contain stands of some of the most rare and endemic plant species like the Giant Lobelia Elgonensis and dotted clusters of peculiar groundsels, which are unique to Africa. .The dense scrubs and brilliant everlasting wild flowers that will add to your Mountain Elgon adventure also encounters to this park.

Bird lovers will enjoy about 300 bird species including the endangered Lammergeiers, the rare Jackson's Francolin, Guinea fowls, sunbirds and Turacos among other.

Several primates inhabit the mountain like the. Forest monkeys which fill the forest canopy as giant forest Hog, Bushbuck, Antelope, Civet, Wildcat and the exclusive Leopard roam below. Bush Duiker, Hyena, Jackal, Rock Hyrax, Buffalo and Elephant rove between the forest and moorland. Many of the animals visit Mountain Elgon for their valuable mineral deposits found at the caves.
